George's Passions

Joan Collins, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Shakin' Stevens... find out why these are just *some* of George's passions in this article from Now Magazine (UK)

One World - Grief Never Grows Old
Jan. 2005

Recording his part from New York, George has joined Sir Cliff Richard and Bee Gees' Robin & Barry Gibb to record the single "Grief Never Grows Old". Under the banner of "One World", Grief Never Grows Old is released in the UK on January 24 with proceeds going to benefit the victims of the tsunami which hit Asia on Boxing Day and has claimed more than 200,000 lives.

Says George: "I just did a verse or two of warbling on it on (Jan. 11). I don't really like singing stuff I haven't written but it's for a good cause. I have a great affection for Asia, and I was quite moved by the stuff I saw. People always criticize charity records or gestures by famous people. I think it's better to do something than to sit around being snooty and grand. I hope it helps." (quote from www.charlotte.com)

  • RIP Jerry O'Dowd

From the UK Mirror, Sept. 11 2004

Dad dies of heart attack before they can heal bitter rift

    By Matt Laddin

Boy George is stricken after his father died before the two men could heal the rift that has divided them for four bitter years. Dad Jeremiah, 71, collapsed from a suspected heart attack while in holiday in Egypt just as the 43-year-old star prepared to patch up their row.

Former Culture Club lead singer George - real name George O'Dowd - will attend his funeral. But he will be cheated of the reconciliation he yearned for. A spokesman for the star, who lives in New York where his hit musical Taboo is appearing on Broadway, said: "George is very upset.

"He hadn't been close to his dad in recent years. But deep down there was still a love there. There had been moves to patch things up. It's very sad. George will fly back to the UK for the funeral. He's determined to pay his respects."

In his 1995 autobiography, gay George described his decorator dad as an emotionally distant workaholic and gambler with a violent temper. He said: "He's someone I have loathed and loved, someone I have fought with and cried over and someone I have longed to be close to. I spent my childhood vowing never to be like him. I told myself 'If that's how a man acts I don't want to be one'."

George grew up in a council house in Eltham, South East London, with five brothers and sisters. But Jeremiah was a cold parent. The star said: "Dad worked night and day, foolishly believing that food and warm clothes were an adequate substitute for love and affection. We never went hungry. But a hug is often more substantial than a warm meal." He accused Jeremiah - known to his family as Jerry - of treating wife Dinah like a "piece of sh*t" during their 42 years' marriage.

The couple split in 2000. Jeremiah remarried in 2002. But as the father and son feud went on, George was not invited to the wedding. As a child, tormented George had to fight homophobia from gangs of local children who taunted him and branded him a "queer" and a "poof".

He believed his early experiments with outrageous make-up may have been an attempt to shock his father. The singer-songwriter finally revealed his homosexuality to his parents when he was 15. But George, whose hits include Karma Chameleon and Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? was astonished by Jeremiah's reaction.

That hardline dad turned to the troubled teenager, and just said: "That's fine, son."

MCV interview with George, July 2, 2004

Having penned and starred in the West End hit Taboo, and only recently completing an anniversary tour with Culture Club, you'd think Boy George would have little left to say. Not quite.
